Something happened between my editing controller and the “shift+x” function, causing my editing process to slow down to pre-Luna paces… really annoying. Turns out it was user error and I may had been tweaking while drinking the night before. Anyhoo… I kept insisting that my magic “delete+move all clips to the beginning of the region” (now on referred to as “Super Cut” trademark gustafsonvoices llc.) should be CMD+X, when we all know it’s Shift+X. Stupid me. But it did give me courage to Save the macros for Consolidating a clip and bringing up the export clip controls to separate single buttons. If I keep going I’ll never have to touch my macbook keyboard again! Conclusion… listen, Luna, like Logic or any other full featured DAW was made for super cool music guys recording a ton of tracks and then trying to make those tracks sync up and possibly even sound good with the magic of modern technology and plug ins.
I know a ton of VO guys that use Audacity, so did I… in 1998. One of my main clients uses soundforge, but his excuse is that he lives in the partly Russian occupied country of Georgia. Yes, you can git ‘r done with either one of those things in the same way that you can go to the grocery store with your bicycle. All I’m saying is give it a shot, give it a week, look up some documentation, be patient and who knows, maybe you’ll have more time to spend practicing, or with a coach or god forbid cold calling potential clients! Besides, it’s free! You are welcome.
Epilogue: Alright, I’m back in Hungary now in my perfect little VO studio since last Sunday (a week now) and I haven’t even opened Logic. In fact, I spent a precious few moments to set some macros on my trusty shuttle pro controller… which, you probably don’t need unless you spend more than a couple hours a day doing intensive editing. I programmed one button to “shift” so I can choose multiple clips before consolidating them with another button “Option+Shift+3” and then finally the last button “Cmd+Shift+K” to open the clip export window. Like seriously, now after working with Luna for two weeks and setting some easy multi key progressions (macros) to my controller, I literally don’t have to touch the keyboard on my macbook pro at all except to name files. I loved logic, but I’m not going back…. well, not going back, but if I have to do any lip sync dubbing to video I’ll have to do it in Logic.
ChatGPT went all out on this one. You are welcome.
Oh, and before I leave you, one more thing. I use three screens for my setup. The macbook screen, a very wide screen above that on the wall for editing and the last one is a vertical screen in my vocal booth for copy. One thing that I’ve always wished was to have the transport controls in my booth as well as the editing screen… because, during a very busy day, I get anxiety because I can’t remember if I hit record. On logic, you can ‘disconnect’ the transport controls and move them around a bit (although very buggy and doesn’t play with multi screen setups well). Also, there is supposed to be an iPad app for that and somehow I used my phone to do it at one point, but it was very buggy and unreliable and I don’t like having my phone in the booth for multiple reasons. Anyway, I posted this desire on a Luna users FB group and found out about a great feature in Luna called “New Alternate Window”, in the Window Menu. So, I created a new alternate window and moved it to my booth monitor. Holy wow it’s cool because it has it’s own preferences and stuff.
What I mean is that the two windows (one on editing and one in the booth) can have different stuff, different size tracks, etc.. AND when I got everything where I wanted it, I replaced my template with the new settings and now, everytime I open my template TWO screens open on two different monitors with all my preferences saved. I got everything I wanted in DAW and all because I was curious where UA was with Luna nowadays.
Thanks for listening and hope you found some of this useful.
